Cavs and Celtics complete trade

On Wednesday night, the Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics was officially completed.

After a week of speculation about whether or not Cleveland would void the trade or seek further compensation, the Celtics are sending a 2020 second round pick from the Miami Heat to the Cavaliers.

So the official trade is

  • Celtics receive Kyrie Irving
  • Cavaliers receive Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, 2018 1st round pick via Brooklyn, 2020 2nd round pick via Miami, $5.8 million trade exception (media won’t tell you that)

The fact that the Cavaliers didn’t get an additional first round pick makes me believe that Isaiah Thomas’ hip isn’t as bad as expected after his physical results came back.

Or it could be that the Cavaliers couldn’t find another deal that was equal in value of the Celtics offer. We’ll find out in the coming weeks and months.

Regardless of what Thomas can bring to the court once he’s healthy, the Cavaliers still got a good return. Crowder will bring immediate help to the Cavaliers on the defensive front and hopefully contain Warriors forward Kevin Durant should the teams meet in the NBA Finals.

Zizic is a promising big man but still unknown as he’ll transition from the Euro style of basketball to the NBA.

Those draft picks should help the team one way or another.

The Brooklyn pick will either net us a superstar in a blockbuster trade to help convince Lebron James to stay past this season or with the Nets being a bad team, it could net the Cavs a top 5 pick in the 2018 draft to help start the rebuilding process in the event that James leaves.

I believe the Cavaliers will attach that second round pick with guard Iman Shumpert, who the team has been trying to move for a couple seasons now.
