Brock Osweiler to start against Giants

Browns head coach Hue Jackson announced Wednesday afternoon that Brock Osweiler will start the second preseason game against the New York Giants on Monday.

DeShone Kizer, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan will follow in that order.

Jackson also added that whoever will start the third preseason game against Tampa  has a very good chance to be the starter for the season opener against Pittsburgh on September 10.

Osweiler started last week against New Orleans and finished 6-14 for 42 yards passing in the Browns 20-14 victory.

While Kizer is listed third on the depth chart, he’ll be with the second team offense and it’s possible he’ll see some action with the first team offense on Monday night. After his performance againthis st the Saints where he threw for 184 yards and the game winning touchdown, Kizer has been gaining momentum in the competition.

Kizer and Osweiler have been splitting the first team snaps while Kessler and Hogan have been running the scout team offense in the last several days of practice.

There’s no idea yet of how long Coach Jackson will have the first team offense out on the field against the Giants by typically on the second preseason game, the first team will be out there for at least a half.

If I was Coach Jackson, I’d have Osweiler out there for the entire first quarter and half of the second and then turn things over to Kizer and leave him out there until the fourth quarter.

If Kizer can carry his momentum over with the second team offense and elevates the talent around him like he did with the third string, then I think it’s a no brainer you start him against Tampa and eventually Pittsburgh.

If Osweiler can improve upon his poor performance and lead the offense to touchdowns, then it buys Jackson and the offensive staff more time to groom Kizer.

Erving, Bitonio out with injuries, Thomas to rest

The first team offensive line will look very different this coming Monday.

Joe Thomas will be sitting out the game but told reporters he will play against Tampa.

Cam Erving and Joel Bitonio will both be out with injuries. Erving suffered a calf injury on Tuesday and Bitonio suffered a knee injury.

Both will be listed “week to week” moving forward but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported both players are aiming to return for the regular season opener against Pittsburgh.
