Indians call up Bradley Zimmer

The Indians top prospect is heading to the major leagues.

Outfielder Bradley Zimmer got the call to leave Columbus and join the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday.

He will start in centerfield and will bat 9th in the lineup against Tampa Bay.

This move comes after both Brandon Guyer and Abraham Almonte both went on the disabled list on Monday and the Indians needing an outfield bat.

Zimmer is the top prospect in the organization according to MLB.com and was the first round pick for the Indians in 2014.

In 33 games this season with Columbus, he’s hit .294 with five home runs, two triples and eleven doubles. He’s also struck out 43 times.

Last season in 130 games between Columbus and Akron, Zimmer hit .250 with 15 home runs, 62 runs batted in and 38 stolen bases.

His on base percentage has been at least .365 or higher in each of his four seasons of professional baseball.

Even as a rookie, he’ll be someone teams will take notice to. His presence as a batter, base runner and as a defensive glove will earn respect right away.

He should take some pressure off some of the veterans once he gets comfortable in the clubhouse.

A guy like Edwin Encarnacion could use some less pressure as he’s started off slow so far this season.

Roster Moves

Along with Zimmer getting called up, pitcher Shawn Armstrong was also called up from Columbus.

To make the roster spots open for those two, the Indians sent Yandy Diaz back down to Columbus and designated pitcher Carlos Frias for assignment.
