Browns to sign Jason McCourty

The Browns didn’t address the secondary until late in the NFL Draft and with fourth round pick Howard Wilson going down with a fractured kneecap, it was felt that they needed to add a defensive back.

It looks like they did.

Barring a last minute snag according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the team will sign Jason McCourty to a two year deal.

Courtney Fallon of NFL Network tweeted out the contract details straight from McCourty himself

The nine year veteran was cut by the Tennessee Titans in April after spending his entire career with them since being drafted in the sixth round in 2009.

In eight seasons, McCourty played in 108 games, recorded 410 tackles, a sack, five fumble recoveries and 13 interceptions. He also has two defensive touchdowns, both coming via fumble recoveries.

Last year, he played in fourteen games and produced 59 tackles and two interceptions. He was due $7 million from Tennessee this coming season and after the two sides couldn’t come to a restructure of his deal, the Titans decided to let him go.

Jason also has a twin brother Devin who was a first round pick for the New England Patriots in 2010 and has been part a big part of their Super Bowl winning dynasty.

He has some history with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams who spent the 2013 season in Tennessee with McCourty as a senior assistant defensive coach.

This is a good short term solution to help the Browns secondary. They were one of, if not the worst in football last season.

Now in my opinion as well as others, McCourty will likely play free safety, a huge glaring hole. The team is set for the moment at cornerback with Joe Haden, Jamar Taylor and Briean Boddy-Calhoun as the projected starters.

If an injury happens to one of the three, then McCourty can slide to corner if necessary.
