Cavs and Goodyear agree to sponsorship deal

It’ll be announced later today but reports are now out that the Cleveland Cavaliers and Goodyear have agreed to a multiyear partnership.

The announcement will be made at 1:00 at Quicken Loans Arena with CEO Len Komorosky and General Manager David Griffin representing the organization.

ESPN’s Darren Rovell was the first to confirm the deal between the two organizations

Crain’s Cleveland Kevin Kleps also confirmed the report

With NBA allowing jersey patches with companies advertising their business on team uniforms. It’s seen on an international level with soccer uniforms and the WNBA just started that on their uniforms over the last several seasons.

A Cavalier fan has already taken to social media with what a Cavs jersey with the Goodyear logo could look like.

I love that the Cavaliers picked Goodyear as their business to represent on their jerseys. It’s the perfect match for the Northeast Ohio basketball team to partner up with an Northeast Ohio based company like Goodyear.

They’ve been negotiating with them since February since Bloomberg first reported it and it’s nice that a deal was able to get done.

Dan Gilbert and the ownership group understand that Ohio is loyal to their home based companies and that the Cavaliers should also remain loyal to the local companies.

There was speculation when the “major announcement” could be that the NBA All-Star Game was coming to Cleveland and that still may happen in the future. The Cavaliers have been trying to bring it back to Cleveland for the first time since 1997 but the NBA told the organization that Quicken Loans Arena needed upgrades and renovations.

Those renovations will take place after the city of Cleveland approved the $140 million dollar project in late April.

There was also speculation that there could be an extension announcement for David Griffin as his contract expires at the end of the season. Rumors have swirled that Griffin is being pursued by the Orlando Magic to be President of Basketball Operations. Also the Atlanta Hawks have been rumored to have interest in Griffin.

Cavaliers forward Lebron James has spoken publicly that Griffin should get an extension and remain as general manager but there’s been talk that the relationship between Griffin and ownership is “not good.”
