Browns cornerback Howard Wilson fractures kneecap

One of the members of the 2017 Browns rookie class could be done for the season.

Cornerback Howard Wilson suffered a fractured patella during Friday’s rookie minicamp session.

He will undergo surgery and could potentially miss the entire season although that is unknown at the time.

Wilson was the team’s fourth round pick in the NFL Draft just two weeks ago. The Browns loved him so much that they moved up to select him.

He also signed his rookie contract on Thursday.

He’s long and athletic for an NFL cornerback and could’ve potentially pushed Jamar Taylor and Briean Boddy-Calhoun for playing time in a poor cornerback group that struggled last season.

If he does have to miss the entire season, the Browns should seriously consider adding a corner via free agency or a trade.

While Taylor and Boddy-Calhoun had flashes of production, it’s unclear if they can do that again.

Two names that come to mind is Jason McCourty and Alterraun Verner. Both are 28 and 29 respectively and have been had success in the NFL. It also wouldn’t be cost effective to bring them in on a one to two year deal.

The Browns also have some undrafted free agents in town for rookie minicamp this weekend including Michigan corner Channing Stribling.

If any of them impress the coaches including defensive coordinator Gregg Williams enough, the organization could decide to develop them instead of bringing in a veteran who would take reps away.
