Browns release Josh McCown and Tramon Williams

In what wasn’t a surprise to many Browns fans, the Cleveland Browns made two roster cuts on Tuesday evening.

Veterans Josh McCown and Tramon Williams’ contracts were terminated by the team, making them both free agents and free to sign anywhere immediately.

These two cuts frees up 11.3 million in cap space, bringing the Browns total to almost 110 million dollars in cap space with free agency looming.

Josh McCown signed with the Browns in 2015 to be the veteran and mentor to the then quarterback room of Johnny Manziel and Connor Shaw.

McCown was the 2015 opening starter and proceeded to play in 13 games (11 starts) during his two year tenure. He was 1-10 as starting quarterback of the team. Completing 60.4% of his passes for 3,209 yards, 18 touchdowns and ten interceptions.

He’ll be remembered for his helicopter spin during the 2015 opener against the Jets which resulted in a concussion.

He also set a franchise record when he threw for 457 yards against Baltimore in Week 5 of the 2015 season which resulted in his only win as Browns starter, a 33-30 overtime victory over the Ravens.

Now McCown stated at the end of the season he will continue to play but if he does end up retiring, he has a future in coaching and it could be with the Cleveland Browns. Head coach Hue Jackson said he will have a spot on his staff for McCown once he decides to retire.

And with the Browns quarterback coach spot still vacant following Pep Hamilton’s decision to leave the organization, McCown could be the next quarterback coach alongside Jackson.

Tramon Williams also joined the Browns in 2015 to replace Buster Skrine who left for the New York Jets. The longtime Packer came to Cleveland with a big price tag, 21 million over three years.

Unfortunately, Williams never lived up to his salary. He appeared in 27 of 32 games (22 starts) and only recorded two interceptions and 14 pass deflections.

And with Jamar Taylor and Briean Boddy-Calhoun emerging last season, Browns fans expected Tramon to be a roster cut this offseason.

More roster cuts could be on the horizon, potential names include

  • Offensive lineman Alvin Bailey
  • Offensive lineman John Greco
  • Defensive end Desmond Bryant
  • Linebacker Demario Davis
  • Quarterback Robert Griffin III

The Browns have the most cap space in the NFL and should be expected players once free agency begins on March 9.

However don’t expect a spending spree, owner Jimmy Haslam said the team will spend wisely. They also have players who are heading for free agency including Terrelle Pryor and Isaiah Crowell.

Joel Bitonio and Christian Kirksey are coming up on their final years and should be getting extensions to keep them here long term, another task Haslam said the team must accomplish.
