Browns news and notes (12-9-16)

Griffin activated, McCants waived

After the announcement yesterday that Robert Griffin III was named the starting quarterback for this Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the team officially activated him onto the 53 man roster.

To make room on the roster, the team waived offensive lineman Matt McCants. The five year veteran was claimed off waivers by the team on November 28 after spending time with the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders.

McCants didn’t appear in a game for the Browns

Payton suspended

Rookie wide receiver Jordan Payton has been suspended by the NFL for violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.

Here’s the statement from the league and team:

Payton was the 154th overall pick in this past April’s NFL Draft out of UCLA. This season he appeared in four games but only caught one pass for 3 yards.

Regular season game in London?
The NFL announced today that they’re extending their commitment to London by playing four regular season games over in the United Kingdom starting in 2017.

The Browns could be involved in one of those games.

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com and the Plain Dealer reported that the team is on a short list of teams to play a game in London either next year or 2018.

It is unknown if the team will lose one of their home games for next season. When a team is listed as the home team in London, they’ll lose one of their home games in the states.

The four games for next season will be announced Tuesday morning with the New Orleans Saints and the Miami Dolphins already confirmed as one of the games.

The Browns have never played a regular season game in the United Kingdom but have traveled across the pond to play before.

In 1989, the team participated in the “American Bowl” against the Philadelphia Eagles.

There is also a official “Browns Backers” club located in the United Kingdom. The “British Bulldawgs Browns Backers” started in 2001 and has 51 members.

So when the Browns do end up playing in London, I expect the Dawg Pound to come out in full force.
