Kevin Love opts out of contract and becomes free agent

Cavaliers power forward Kevin Love has opted out of his contract and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent according to ESPN NBA Insider Marc Stein. This wasn’t a surprise for Cavs fans as general manager David Griffin told the media last week he expected Love to make this move.

Love appeared in 75 games this past season averaging 16.4 points and 9.7 rebounds for the Cavaliers after being acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves last summer. He also appeared in four playoff games before dislocating his shoulder in the final game of the first round of the playoffs against the Boston Celtics.

I fully expect Love to resign with the Cavaliers long term this summer. He’s told the media numerous times that he wants to be with the Cavaliers long term and I truly believe he means that. But I fully expect teams with cap space like the Los Angeles Lakers to make a run at the All Star forward. Another team to watch is the Boston Celtics who according to Yahoo writer Adrian Wojnarowski are looking to possibly add the trio of Love, Robin Lopez and Paul Pierce to the young Celtics nucleus. If he chooses to leave Cleveland, the Cavaliers could possibly get players and draft picks via a sign and trade. But in the end I believe Love will remain a Cavalier and keep the big 3 of himself, Kyrie Irving and Lebron James intact and be a force in the NBA for years to come.
